verbose drivel, excruciatingly long and drawn out. 4/10 I lasted 20 minutes until I gave up. Even Richard Gere couldn't save this one.

This is a twisted intermingling of high dudgeon between grown siblings, mental illness, maternal love as a form of mental illness, the looming horror they all jointly face of 'the children made a terrible mistake,' and a politician faced with the moral dilemma of ''...and justice for all.'' A fair picture of the ''mistake'' is, in bits and pieces, from the very beginning made starkly clear by clips inserted at odd moments. The very last scenes reveal who really controls whom in this menage, and the ending is eminently unsatisfying. I didn't like the film yet found myself trudging through it anyway. Lines here and there ---mostly from monologues by Paul-- stuck in my head and took my mind in a lot of different directions afterwards: the symbolism of Gettysburg and the ''civil war'' that famously pitted brother against brother, referenced throughout the film; too many of today's young, respectful of little, disconnected from basic human values -- innate or learned? In either case, frightening; that wars are in part used to control population; the fact that proportionately more good people than assholes have probably died in wars, believing they were fighting for principle, and that has affected our gene pool adversely (more assholes having probably survived wars due to having far more affection for their lives and profit than for principle). Daily, horrific news stories take our breath away, stories sensationlized by news media owned by corporations and run, we suspect, by more and more sociopaths (with a plan ?). The question arises of the ''mentally ill'' innocents...are they unconsciously trying not to conform to a society changing for the worse? The film gave me lots to ruminate on, so in that respect, I have to say it's probably at least 9/10. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As a journalist once said on 'Madam Secretary', ''What we least want to hear is what we most need to be told.'' (paraphrased)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As for the the quoted comments by Koch, author of the novel this was based upon, isn't cynicism simply optimism ground down, weeping for what could be ? (:::Thinking::: Gibran, joy and sorrow being measures of the selfsame cup...)

Terrible. The only thing worse than a film with an ending where all the ''bad people'' succeed is one where there is zero resolution. This happens to be one where it seems they combined the two! Awful movie.

When you have to force yourself to watch a movie to its end then ask yourself...what happened, what was that all about...you know it is time to warn others...BAD MOVIE

Cannot fault the cast as they are all great, but this is an overlong and dragged out movie. There's a few really strong and genuine dramatic moments, but you have to wade through a swamp of pretentious garbage to get there.

A small audience will love this story but most won't like it at all. Unsavory topics such as child murderers, multi-generational mental illness including mother/son emotional incest, violence versus avoidance and keeping secrets... all make this drama very dark and heavy and oppressive in tone. There is heavy-handed use of the Civil War along with the treatment, then and now, of Black people and women and the homeless being treated as either direct targets or side issues when it comes to the importance of victims and how they are treated with deliberate injustice to support the rise of others. This film goes deep and then leaves you to think about it. 4/5

Seems like art imitating life pretty clearly. Things are just so dirty and corrupt everywhere and all the wrong things are rewarded/protected. We're on our last legs. Not sure we'll survive the next 5 years, historically speaking it sure doesn't seem likely. And I'm just wondering what man on the planet looks like Richard Gere who is nearing 70 years old? Seriously? He looks amazing.

What is strange is I swear I have seen this movie already with english subtitles a few months ago. Go to 1:33 and watch from there, or even 1:51. Another ten minute movie drawn into 2 hours. And I am not sure if it was supposed to be touching that there was a history of mental illness?? For me, that is the baine of most ill peoples existence, and of course they cannot admit mental defeat, because they went to the most prestigious schools and daddy spoon feed their issues, covered it up because becky slid off her cracker and lil timmy got banged too hard that one night. Its the perfect example of how blind, biased, rich, privileged, snot nosed entitlement types deal with reality. Sickening. Offspring after offspring, exact replicas of mummy. And Gere did not impress tying to pretend to fight his conscience, which was really him further milking the privilege of even having the opportunities in life that afforded him and his entire line the ability to have dinner on --tax payers-- dime. It was a political move. This is the kind of sickness that makes the eradication of racism both inevitable and impossible. How many kids like this are sitting in positions of influence and judgement behind their rich uncle, mommy or daddy??? The best question Gere asked was --what will he become if he gets away with this-- that is the million dollar question.

Mental illness my ass. This is what the privileged do. They can't appreciate what they have, they want to create as much suffering as possible. This is how they are throughout history. Inherently cruel and weak. Lol

As boring as some might say this movie is, the message it contains cannot be wished away. The lack of entertainment and razzmatazz and the reality of today's world depicted, obviously made many uncomfortable. It'll be good to watch it to the end and, try to appreciate the message and may be do a self-evaluation on how this could be prevented or what is the best position to be adopted, if faced with this situation.

Not too good! Expected a lot better film with a cast like that, total waste:(

Waste of an almost great cast (Richard Gere is his usual blinky staring self here so not much to waste) with an overreaching talky script that does such a thorough job at talking down to its audience, there really is not much left to the imagination. I liked it better when it was called Gods of Carnage and I didn't even really like that one either. 2/5 for the cast

I apologize if this comment appears twice. I am new to the site and lost a few comments before I realized I had to confirm my email. I thought this movie was slow and boring, fell asleep watching and that is not a good sign.
