Simultaneously innocent and sinister, this film is the best film I've seen in a very long time. Guillermo del Toro has created an intriguing and fresh masterpiece. The Amphibian reminds me quite a bit of a certain Abe Sapien, as well. Thanks a million, uploaders.

This film is an astonishingly detailed vision that is at once singular and reminiscent, ballsy and old-fashioned. Characters have familiar shapes from the middle of last century, but they're fully dimensional. Del Toro crafts an homage to mid-century creature features, injects the unspeakable, and produces one of my favorite films of the year.

Such a beautifully dark sci-fi romance. I enjoyed how original this was with the story and characters, they completely engage you with their lives from the start. Has a bunch of elements that was executed very well, especially the bits with humor. The creature does remind me of Abe Sapien from Hellboy, but this one has more heart. Guillermo del Toro is a master storyteller and has made one of the best fantasy films in years.

Excellent film. Del Toro does it again w/a dark, fairytale love story that fawns over and pays tribute to movies and TV of yesteryear. Sally Hawkins and Richard Jenkins are amazing as is the rest of the cast. It has a few flaws but the majority of the film is exceptional and gorgeous to make up for it. Being a big Del Toro fan I really need to see this on the big screen since the visuals are stunning. Worth the time seeing.

I tried, but could not. Sorry, not for me. The quality of acting and filming is great, but the fantasy is too much for me at the moment. I'm out.

Waited for this one with baited (no pun intended) breath. Everyone singing its praises. I guess I will be the first to say, Good but not great. Nice, soft love story with some danger thrown in but predictable. For some reason, it reminds me of all the hype for that mediocre - La La Land. When a movie is predictable it can become slow and drag. Have we lost the ability to make and appreciate truly GREAT films? Because this is not a GREAT film. Entertaining but a one time watch. 7/10

This was awesome! Not really sure why some people are saying it's boring and nothing happens....because it's not boring, and quite a lot happens. The sets, the music, the acting, the characters, the creature design, the refreshingly unique spin on some old-fashioned, fairy-tale-ish elements was all so beautifully crafted and executed. It has that sense of childlike wonder that's typical of del Toro's films, which I love. I guess the girl-meets-fishboy love story will probably be a little too weird for some people to get past, and apparently some people are so ADD that they can't sit through the first 10 minutes of any film unless there's immediate nail-biting action and things exploding.....but for everyone else, I highly recommend this film.

Outstanding. Probably the best movie I'll see this year. Romance, period drama and creature feature, seamlessly blended. The colour palette was gorgeous and the acting sublime. Do not miss this!

Am I the only one that while watching this was hoping that Guillermo Del Toro would do a BioShock movie? Oh and this was really good too! I love all of Del Toro's stuff though.

I'm glad I gave it a shot because I was extremely pleased and happy that I took the time to watch it after initially passing it by on the assumption of being too corny. Unique and fresh in this day in age of boring slapstick comedies and over rated explosion filled action movies. Good choice of era to set this in as well.

This film is surprisingly exquisite, both sophisticated and childlike. So beautiful. Del Toro's touch is light. He teases with intimate concepts, yet draws a stark line around what is truly evil and what is good. Bravo! He surpasses Pan's Labyrinth with this lush, mature gem. Will be called a classic, in time.

I have noticed Del Toro's love of wry grotesqueness but I feel this film veers toward the pretentious. There seems to be more than a few cliche awards season tropes that cheapen the grandness of the scenery and cinematography. What could have been a love letter to B-series cinema, has become bogged down in overused devices. The spirit and sincerity that made Del Toro's Cronos such a rare jewel is sorely missing from Shape of Water.

I was half expecting a marvel film from the comments, however it is far from it. The story is somewhat cliche and slow, whereas the screenplay, directing and cinematography was pretty good. The cast also did a good job portraying the characters. Overall a good film, it just didn't fall into my personal preferred style. 6/10

This movie sounds astonishing on paper but the execution was kind of strange...

Loved this flick. All I can think of is Beauty and the Beast meets Swamp Thing. It deals with research atrocities and man's inhumanity to man in the 60s. Del Toro tries to remedy the injustice through love, no matter how weird and unnatural it maybe.
